Can you outsmart the fallacy 

that started a witch hunt?

おお 魔女狩り 

Ah, a witch hunt. 

人間は絶え間無く理性を 探究しています

Humans are tireless in their pursuit of reason. 

「時は1950年 

"It’s 1950. 

ソビエトと中国の 共産主義政権からの脅威の下で 

Following threats from the communist governments of the Soviet Union and China,

米国の反共産主義の感情は 最高に高まっていました 

anti-communist sentiment in the United States is at an all-time high. 

ジョセフ・マッカーシー上院議員は 政府の政策に影響を与えている ― 205人の共産主義者の名簿を 持っていると訴えています」 

Senator Joseph McCarthy claims he has a list of 205 communists in the US who are influencing government policy." 

私はチャンネルを変えていませんよね？ 

Didn’t I just change the channel? 

ああ わかりました 

Ah, I see. 

これは違う魔女狩りのことですね 

It’s a different witch hunt. 

「上院はマッカーシーの訴えを 審議する委員会を設置しました 

"The senate forms a committee to investigate McCarthy’s claims. 

マッカーシーの最初の申し立ては 

McCarthy names his first case: 

それは弁護士 裁判官そして活動家でもある 有名人ドロシー・ケニオンに対するものです 

against prominent lawyer, judge, and activist Dorothy Kenyon. 

彼女を共産主義の活動の場となっている 28組織のメンバーであると告訴しています 

He accuses her of membership to 28 organizations that are communist fronts.

全国の新聞が急いで彼女の弁護を始め 

Newspapers around the country rush to her defense, 

彼女が声高に反共産主義を 唱えた記録を示します 

pointing out her vocally anti-communist record. 

上院はとにかく 公聴会を予定しており 

The senate committee schedules a hearing anyway, 

彼女には５日の準備期間しか ありません」 

 and she has just five days to prepare." 

これはひどいですね 

This is too much. 

もし政府が理性の力にならないならば 

If the government won’t be a voice of reason, 

わたしがならなければ 

I’ll have to. 

これならまあ似合っているね 

That’s better. 

立法府ともあろう方々が公聴会を行うことに 同意したことに驚いています 

I’m surprised you good legislators have agreed to move this hearing forward. 

あなたがたは無知から生じた ある種の議論の餌食になっています 

You’re falling prey to a type of argument from ignorance: 

それは 間違いと証明されていないが故に ある主張は正しいとする考え方です 

assuming that a claim is true because it hasn’t been proven false. 

この告訴は 上院議員マッカーシーが 合理的な証拠を示さずに 裁判官ケニオンを訴えたものですね 

The claim being Senator McCarthy’s accusations against Judge Kenyon, for which he provided no legitimate evidence. 

そうでしょう？ 

Is that right? 

私はそう思いました 

I thought so. 

彼女が関わっているとされる　 所謂 共産主義者組織の幾つかは 存在さえしていません 

Some of the so-called communist organizations he accused her of joining don’t even exist. 

間違いだと証明されていないことを理由に ある主張は真実だと決めてかかることは 他の多くの可能性を無視しています 

To assume a claim is true because it hasn’t been proven false ignores many other possibilities: 

まだ間違いが証明されていない可能性 

that it hasn’t been proven false yet, 

正しいか間違いか証明出来ない可能性 

that it can’t be proven true or false, 

完全には正しくないか 完全には 間違いではない可能性など 

or that it isn’t completely true or completely false, 

ほんの一例です

to name a few. 

これは有用な経験則を導き出します 

This leads to a handy rule of thumb: 

立証責任は訴える側にあるということです 

the burden of proof lies with the person making the claim. 

言い換えれば 

In other words, 

訴えるならば 証拠を提出するということです 

you make the claim, you supply the proof. 

もし 誰かがエイリアンは存在すると 言ったならば 

If someone told you aliens exist, 

あなたはエイリアンが存在しない証拠を 探し始めるでしょうか 

would you head off to find proof that they don’t exist? 

もちろん いいえですよね 

Of course not. 

あなたはUFOを見せてくれと その人に言うことでしょう 

You’d tell that person to show you the UFO. 

同じことが 確立したコンセンサスに反することを 誰かが訴えるときに適用されます 

The same applies when someone makes a claim that contradicts an established consensus. 

全ての入手可能な証拠が 人類が地球の気温上昇を 引き起こしていることを示していれば 

So when all the available evidence suggests that humans are causing an increase in global temperatures, 

立証責任は果たされています 

the burden of proof has been fulfilled— 

もし 同意しない場合 

if you disagree, 

そうでないことを 証明する責任が有ります 

it becomes your responsibility to prove otherwise. 

宜しいですか 

Right? 

先走りをしてしまいました 

Ah, I’ve gotten ahead of myself. 

私の言っていることの意味は すぐに解りますよ 

You’ll see what I mean soon enough. 

とにかく 法制度は建前として このルールを認めています 

Anyway, your legal system supposedly recognizes this rule— 

だから あなたがたはここで 一体何をしているのですか 

so what are you all doing here? 

「1950年7月17日の出来事です 

"It’s July 17th, 1950, 

上院の小委員会は正式にケニオンに対する 全ての告訴を却下しました」 

and the senate subcommittee has officially dismissed all charges against Kenyon." 

彼らはすべきことをしました

As they should! 

「1954年 上院は正式に マッカーシーを懲戒処分にしました」 

"It’s 1954, and the senate has formally disciplined McCarthy." 

時間が掛かりました 

Took them long enough! 

「彼は残りの任期は務めるでしょう 

"He will serve out the rest of his term, 

しかし ２度と公職に選出されることは ないでしょう 

but will never again be elected to a public office. 

なぜならば 彼が反共産主義を 広めた影響により 

Because of his widespread anti-communist influence, 

何百人もの人が投獄され 

hundreds of people have been incarcerated, 

何千人もの人々が職を失ったからです」 

and thousands have lost their jobs." 

ああ 共産主義者がしたことを見て下さい！ 

Ah! Look what the communists did!
